This piece of #pocketlore came across my screen via Pinterest, and while I didn't see a link to the original article in the post, I did find it on newspapers.com under their free clippings.

The original text reads:

MAN, FOUR MONTHS DEAD, TRIES TO GET OUT OF COFFIN

With an eastbound Santa Fe passenger train running at full speed out of Needles yesterday the express agent and baggagemen were so badly scared by the movements of a corpse in the baggage car that they would have deserted the car had it not been what is known as a blind baggage, according to the statement of a passenger who arrived here last night, says the Prescott Courier. The corpse was being shipped from California to Ohio for interment. The body was that of a man who died four months ago.

Soon after the train pulled out of Needles the occupants of the baggage car saw the lid of the box encasing the remains move, although it was sealed in the usual way. Aware that the man had been dead four months they were surprised at seeing such remarkable signs of life. After recovering from the first shock they approached closer to the coffin casing and were further surprised to see the lid slowly rising from the box as if being pushed up by the strength of the body in the coffin. With the lid open the corpse continued to rise until almost in a standing position before the next station was reached, where with the aid of the trainmen the body was pushed back into its place and unloaded at the depot to be further prepared for shipment to its last resting place.

Passengers who saw the body claim that it was not scientifically prepared for shipment, judging from the odor, and that the box containing the coffin was not hermetically sealed strong enough to comply with the rules governing the shipment of corpses. The queer action of the corpse is believed to have been provoked by the warm weather prevailing in Needles and vicinity.

Until next time, Lore Lovers, stay spooky💖

The Legend of the Pettigrew State Park Werewolf

The Legend of the Pettigrew State Park Werewolf Location: Pettigrew State Park, Creswell NC 27928 Located next to North Carolina's second-largest natural lake, Pettigrew State Park visitors have noticed something fur-miliar watching them from the woods. Werewolf? Dogman? Were-Jason because this place, with its multiple spooky stories, definitely has Camp Crystal Lake vibes? Let's dive in (but not into Lake Phelps, it's a bit shallow). Watch The Legend of the North Carolina Pettigrew State Park Werewolf The Lore Before we get too deep into this piece, I just want to say this was supposed to be a two-day research, write in a week, back in November thing. It's February...I actually had the research and my thoughts done in December but my ranting mouth got the better of me. I needed a break to share the lore with a clear mind. So if this reads less than together between the lore, facts, and my thoughts, well, the Lily wrote the ending then was in time out before writing the...

The Haunting of Alexander Hostler

The Haunting of Alexander Hostler Wilmington, North Carolina's Best-Known Buried Alive Legend Location: St. James Churchyard Cemetery, Wilmington, NC 28401 Every city, town, and village has at least one ghost story about someone being buried alive. This is the story every ghost-loving, taphephobia-having local in Wilmington, North Carolina, knows by heart - the untimely death of Samuel Jocelyn and his subsequent haunting of his best friend, Alexander Hostler. Preface Now, before we get into the lore, I want to give y'all a glimpse of the rabbit hole my mind has been going down with this piece and why it will be slightly different than my usual pieces. I often use Pinterest as a way to locate my Pocket Lore articles, find new locations to research, or see a word perfect for my Lily's Lore Lingo. In this case, it was "taphophila," or (per Pinterest) passion and enjoyment of cemeteries, which I could not locate on Merriam-Webster (I like solid sources, even for lingo...

The Legend of the Siren of the French Broad River

The Legend of the Siren of the French Broad River Alluring Cherokee Cryptid or Just a Bunch of Babble? Location: Asheville, North Carolina Both a well-known and seemingly obscure legend, the Siren of the French Broad River is considered a Cherokee legend and has been making the rounds with non-Cherokee locals since 1845. Watch my research process and wrap-up videos here. The Lore Along the French Broad River, just east of Asheville, NC, weary male travelers have reported hearing a beautiful song and seeing a woman beckoning them from the water. If they are not careful, they fall into her arms and are pulled under the waters of the river, never to be seen again. In some tellings, the man falls victim immediately while in others, the siren visits him in his dreams over the course of 3 nights before luring him into the icy waters of the river.
